Nano Banana Pro vs GPT-5.1 Comparison

Most AI image model comparisons online feel like hype, marketing, or cherry-picked examples. I wanted something more practical. So for this test, I ran the exact same prompts through both GPT-5.1 and Nano Banana Pro using scenarios that real creators actually care about: realistic portraits, stylized anime characters, and clean branded graphics for websites and slides. These represent the three big categories people use AI visuals for every day — content, characters, and communication. The point isn't to declare a universal winner, but to show their strengths side by side so you know which model fits the kind of work you're trying to create.

I ran three real-world image generation tests using the same prompts for both GPT-5.1 and Nano Banana Pro.

The goal wasn't to crown a universal winner — but to show what each model is good at, where they differ, and how their creative styles show up across different use cases.

Here are the results.

Test Prompts Used

To keep the comparison fair, both models received the exact same text prompts.

Here are the three prompts used in each round:

Prompt 1 — Realistic Portrait

A realistic studio portrait of a person with soft diffused lighting, sharp eyes, natural skin texture, and balanced facial proportions. Neutral beige backdrop, subtle depth of field, no stylization, no filters, no makeup, no exaggerated features. Clean professional photography style.

Prompt 2 — Anime Cyberpunk Character

Anime-style cyberpunk character standing in a neon-lit alley at night. Dynamic pose, glowing signs in the background, cool and warm light reflections, detailed outfit with tech accessories, expressive anime eyes, bold outlines, and vibrant colors. Clean composition with strong atmosphere.

Prompt 3 — Clean Branded OG-Card Graphic

A clean, minimalist OG-card style graphic with a modern tech aesthetic. Neutral beige and charcoal tones, soft subtle shadows, simple rectangular layout. Include clear, legible text that reads: "AI Model Comparison 2025". Balanced spacing, crisp typography, no distortion, no extra decorations. Professional editorial design.

Prompt 1: Realistic Portrait

Winner: Tie

Both GPT-5.1 and Nano Banana Pro delivered natural, realistic portraits with accurate lighting and clean skin texture.

If you need stock-style photos, website visuals, or general b-roll imagery, either model is strong enough to use interchangeably.

This category was almost identical for both models — a clean tie.

Prompt 2: Anime Cyberpunk Character

Winner: Nano Banana Pro

Both models produced good-looking anime characters, but the differences become clear once you zoom into the details.

What Nano Banana Pro did better

  • Nailed the cyberpunk genre with goggles, tech wear, and neon gear
  • Captured a more dynamic, expressive pose
  • The style feels closer to Cyberpunk 2077 or early 90s anime
  • The aesthetic accuracy to the prompt was noticeably stronger

Where GPT-5.1 differed

  • The cyberpunk elements were softer or missing
  • The pose was less dynamic
  • The output looks more like a modern animated TV series — polished, but not as gritty or genre-specific

Both images look great at first glance, but Nano Banana Pro's attention to stylistic cues and details gives it the win here.

Prompt 3: Clean OG-Card Branding Graphic

Winner: Nano Banana Pro

This one surprised me.

GPT-5.1 generated a very simplistic design — clean, but not visually compelling. It didn't attempt anything beyond minimal layout rules, resulting in an output that felt safe but plain.

Nano Banana Pro, however, created a much more interesting infographic-style composition with better structure, spacing, and visual hierarchy.

This seems to be a major strength of Nano Banana Pro:

It excels at illustrations, infographics, and presentation-ready slides that look professionally designed.

Final Conclusion

Both models are excellent, but they shine in different areas.

Where both models perform well

  • Realistic photos
  • Anime characters
  • Aesthetically pleasing images

Where Nano Banana Pro stands out

  • Detailed infographics and slide-style visuals
  • Strong adherence to stylistic prompts
  • More expressive genre-heavy imagery (like cyberpunk)

Where GPT-5.1 performs best

  • Clean, modern character rendering
  • Reliable realism
  • Safe, predictable layouts (good for simple branded graphics)

For most people, the best choice depends on what you're trying to create.

If you want infographics or stylistically accurate illustrations, Nano Banana Pro has the advantage.

If you want clean characters or straightforward compositions, GPT-5.1 remains extremely dependable.

This is just the starting point — I'll continue testing both models with deeper and more complex prompts in future comparisons.

Until next time.
